THE DUTY (TAX)
This document bears the date of 1891. It is a payment receipt for the duty tax on the purchase and sale of animals. In this case, it is the tax paid for the sale of a mule at the Maddalena Fair in Castel di Sangro (the date written at the bottom is July 20). The fairs, which usually took place during religious celebrations, were opportunities for commercial exchanges among the neighboring towns, and often the people of the different communities made long trips, even on foot, in order to buy or sell products. In the lower left corner can be seen the official stamp for the fee collected by the authorities.
